A look back and forward

Okay, here we go. My very first blog. The power in our home went out over an hour ago, and it's gotten dark. So dark that my two fingered visually edited typing ability is very much hampered and very mistake prone. Any way, we now have the light of the candles at my desk, so here I go.

It's the last day of August, meteorological summer, and on cue the temperature has dropped in the last 4-5 hours from the mid 80's of summer, the mid 90's of yesterday, to the mid 60's with the wind howling outside and the rain, lightening and thunder rolling through as if to say, "enough of the lazy summer days and weather. It's time to get serious and show all you people some real weather". I love this time of day and this time of the year. It's so nice to have that real weather coming through, to jar us to our senses and make us realize there are changes on the way.

It's been a really nice summer weather wise, not to hot, and a few more summer showers would have been nice, but I'm not complaining. I got to go hiking, fishing, camping with some of my favorite people, and do a lot of biking. My cycling goal for the summer was to do 1000 miles before my 50th birthday(more on that milestone later) on September 8th, and right now I'm about 70 away from that goal. I've enjoyed riding the Alpine Loop with the beautiful wildflowers, fresh air, and roadside streams and waterfalls. I enjoyed my 111 mile ride around Utah Lake back in August. I enjoyed riding the Slickrock trail down in Moab, though honestly most of it was on foot as man really wasn't meant to ride on two wheels up and down many of those rock surfaces. I saw many paint, rubber, and human flesh stains on those rocks and I'm thankful none were mine. Even as much of that trail I walked, it was still as grueling a five hour advanture as I've done in a while. And finally, earlier this summer Caroline, my middle daughter was married to Jordan Hulet at the Temple in West Jordan Utah. What a blessing that was and is. The wedding and reception were perfect. My entire family came together for the event, and seeing my Mom and Dad and Sisters and Brother, and some neices and nephews and in laws all together at the same time was memorable. I have wonderful memories of the night before the wedding, setting things up for the reception, and spending that time in conversatiosna with Liz and Cathy and Scott and Mac, and others, really just getting to know them all better. What a great family I'm blessed with!!!

Anyway, fall is beginning and I'm psyched for it. Football, school, new menus, leaves changing, all of that will be exciting to watch and observe and participate in. Watching my Children grow and preogress in thier lives is wonderful and rewarding, and sharing it with my wonderful Claudia makes it even more perfect.

I'm turning 50 in a week, and I still feel like a little kid in many ways. I'm excited to reach a milestone of a half century, I feel as though there is much left to see and do, but I also feel like I've accomplished quite a bit, and I'm so grateful that the Lord has blessed me with the abilities he has, so that I could accomplish what I have so far. Anyway, I'd like to celebrate with close loved ones, take a few days off and recharge. 50 is probably a pretty good age.

Well, the power is still out, it's 8:30 now and it's dark and quiet and peaceful in our house. All I hear is the wind outside, and the quiet conversation of Claudia and Hilary upstairs, punctuated with the sound of our mini weiner dog Devo, chasing his beloved tennis ball around the house, up and down the stairs. As Tom Petty says "it's good to be king".
I think I'll join them now...
